Do we have the right to protect ourself?

Gun activists were out in force as they attempted to counteract the actions by officials in the state of Texas. It seems as though the badges and other members of the protective services were attempting a buy back program for the purpose of getting more weapons off the street. As a community we must be accountable for our actions and we understand that, but maybe someone can explain to me why the government holds the position that with fewer guns and ammunition in the hands of law abiding citizens, the lower the crime rate will be. Any individual who tries to rationalize the fact that crime will be reduced with less guns needs to have themselves checked in for treatment, because the only thing that will come about from such a move is the lost ability to protect oneself, giving the criminal the upper hand.
